Hey guys! This week I’m working with Rockstar book tours to bring you a review of the new YA Sci-fi novel Awaken! Buckle up you guys, because this book was a wild ride from start to finish. Now, you guys know that I usually don’t review sci-fi, I leave that to my co-writer Mhairi, but this book just looked too good to pass up.
Awaken follows a sixteen-year-old boy named Ethan, a recent high school (kind of) graduate. In this world, when students graduate they are placed into a job by taking a test. Ethan places into technology level 1, the most coveted position one can get. At sixteen Ethan is swept off to the big city, where he meets Godrik, a genius techie who’s working on a top secret project. Ethan is recruited to the project, but the job may be more dangerous than he could ever know.
This book was a thrilling read. As I said, I generally avoid Sci-fi, but this one did a really good job of balancing the science with character development and world building. A major pitfall that I see in Sci-fi books is that they can sometimes be dominated by the science, with things like character and plot playing second fiddle. This book didn’t have that problem. The characters were really the focus, with Ethan at the center.
Ethan was a complicated and well-developed character. He goes through a lot in this book, more than any sixteen year old should have to, and the depiction of its effect on him is really well done. Often in books we’ll see characters go through really terrible things and then bounce back as if nothing happened. This book instead accurately depicted the effect on Ethan’s mental health, his thoughts, and his relationships. It was refreshing to see such a realistic story.
I have to say though, my favorite part of this book was the relationship. Ethan and Hunter have a sweet, passionate, and adorable relationship. It’s so hard to find good LGBT representation in novels, particularly in YA. I think it’s really important to have more representation because everybody should be able to see people like them in their favorite books. This was a really good book for that, because it presented a healthy LGBT relationship without fetishizing it.
For those that like action packed, fast paced Sci-fi, this is a great book for you. I tore through it in less than a day, and I’m not a sci-fi fan. This was a nice surprise, and I suggest it to all Sci-fi fans. If you’re interested, you can get it here
My final rating- ⅘
Thanks for reading my review, and until next time, happy reading 🙂
