Hey guys! Today I’m working with Rockstar Book Tours to bring you a review of RIP Eliza Hart, a poignant, gripping, and haunting novel about loss at a small school. Ellie came to the Ventana Beach school hoping that it would help her escape her claustrophobia. She wasn’t expecting to run into her childhood best friend Eliza Hart, or that Eliza Hart would be found dead from unknown circumstances a few months later.
I read this entire book in one sitting. It was absolutely incredible. It reminded me of Pretty Little Liars, full to the brim of mystery and suspense. With each page you uncover another layer of the story, another piece of the character’s lives. I kept on telling myself to put it down, to go do my laundry or do my homework, but I just couldn’t.
I think one big strength of this story was the plotting. It felt like a well oiled machine. Each new piece of information clicked with the whole, accelerating the pace and making it even harder to put down. There were so many moments when we would find something out and simultaneously be like “I did not see that coming at all” and “I really should have seen that coming with all the hints.” It was really masterfully done.
Ellie was also such an awesome main character! She was well written, and she truly felt like a real person. She wasn’t at all like the two dimensional heroines that you find in so many YA novels. She was complex, she was smart, and I could really see myself being friends with her in real life.
I can’t tell you guys ANYTHING about the second half of the book (yay for well plotted mysteries) but I can tell you that the end totally blew me away. The author was truly masterful at sleight of hand, of making us think that one thing was happening when really it was something completely different. When I found out what had actually happened I was kicking myself, because we’d been given plenty of hints, but they were so well hidden that I didn’t even see them.
Overall, if you like mysteries and YA, this is the book for you. It was well plotted and entertaining, and definitely a fun way to spend the afternoon.
Final rating- ⅘

About Alyssa B. Sheinmel
I was born in Stanford, California, and even though I moved across the country to New York when I was six years old, I still think of myself as a California girl.
Like so many writers, I grew up loving books. I loved stories so much that when there was nothing to read, I wrote my own stories just to give myself something to read. And when there was no pen and paper to be had, I made up stories and acted them out by myself. I played all the parts, and I was never bored.
